Scottish Modern Apprenticeship Week 2016 construction trades taster sessionĀ - FEMALES ONLY!25/1/2016 Why? There has for some time been a significant gender gap in terms of young women accessing craft / construction apprenticeships, with the vast majority of places taken up by young men. This is consistent across all geographical areas in Scotland, including Renfrewshire. Renfrewshire Council’s MA programme has worked hard to encourage young women to apply for the craft / construction places we have available, with limited success. We discussed with West College Scotland, the potential to work jointly to raise awareness amongst young women of the significant career opportunities available with the construction sector. This will hopefully encourage them to apply for MAs within this sector, including at Renfrewshire Council. Renfrewshire Council and West College Scotland have agreed to take a POSITIVE ACTION approach and to deliver a joint event during Scottish Modern Apprenticeship Week 2016 aimed at YOUNG WOMEN ONLY. This will be a half-day event, which could be replicated up to 4 times over Monday 29 February and Tuesday 1 March 2016. The event will allow young women to consider how they might support their community and build a career within the construction sector. They will hear from other young women who are either working in construction or working towards gaining qualifications which will allow them to begin their career in the construction sector. Attendees will then have the opportunity to try out a small element of a number of trades including Carpentry / Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Bricklaying and Electrical.
