It allows you to personalise your application and make it specific to the position you are applying for. It also allows you to explore and highlight key areas in your CV. Each cover letter should be different for each employer.
How long should it be?
Your cover letter should only be a page long.

Do your researchIt is vital that you research the company you are applying to. Not only will this demonstrate your passion and work ethic, it will allow you to personalise and customise your CV for a particular position. Visit the company website or call the company and ask about their mission statement - What is the company passionate about? What is their goal? How long have the company been in business?
Address your cover letterA common mistake applicants make is forgetting to address their employer in their letter. The employer's contact details can usually be found in the job advert, but if you are unsure, don't be afraid to call the company and ask for a name - your effort may be commended. You are more likely to receive a reply if you send your CV to the correct person!

Tell them why you are attracted to the job. Were you drawn to the company's mission statement? Their reputation? Their recent activity? Give information about relevant work or volunteer experience and your key skills. Explain how you will utilise these skills in the job. |
ConclusionTell them why you think you are a good fit for the company and how it will help you to achieve your career goal. Use your knowledge from your research of the company to make reference to their mission statement and the ways in which you will contribute to its success.

After you have completed your application, it is vital that you proof read it for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and repetition - you don't want to bore your potential employer by repeating phrases.
